Philosophy Course - Philosophy of Science

Tutor : Professor Mark Addis.

Course Overview - The course covers fundamental topics in the philosophy of science. The character of science including the differences between natural and social science is explored.

The course will be held on Mondays between 6pm and 8pm at the Birmingham and Midland Institute beginning on 4th October 2010.

Local History Course - Exploring the Historic Landscape

Our longstanding Local History Course will continue to explore various features of the historic landscape under the guidance of our tutor, Dr Trevor James. Each week the class will focus on a different aspect of our historic landscape. During the course he will be introducing course members to our recently acquired collection of local history books and pamphlets, received under the terms of the Robert Deeley bequest.

Trevor James is the Editor of Local History Magazine and The Historian and is Honorary Secretary of the Historical Association. He began learning his local history at Leicester University and has now been an extra-mural lecturer for over thirty years.

The course fee (ten weeks) is £50.00 in advance (non refundable) or £7.00 on the day.

The course commences Monday 27th September - 10:00 – 12:00.

Monday Music Course - The Development of the Concerto

The Concerto, in many guises, is found in the works of great composers from Corelli to the present day. This course will trace its development throughout the years with particular reference to works by J S Bach, Mozart, Brahms and a number of lesser known composers.

History Course - 2011 (Advance Notice)

A course of six lectures,, under the tutorship of Professor Roger Ward and others on British History in the nineteenth and early twentieth century.

There will be six sessions between 10.30 – 1230, on Tuesdays 8th February to 15th March.

Each session will deal in a discursive way with themes such as demography and social structure: the economy: the political systems and political parties: foreign and imperial policies : social and ideological issues such as religion and education.

Expressions of interest are invited in all the above events.
