Lentic by Naush Sabah

Join us for this FREE poetry event hosted in collaboration with Birmingham City University's Institute of Creative and Critical Writing to mark the launch of Lentic by Naush Sabah with guest poets Sarah Fletcher and Nafeesa Hamid.

Lentic is Naush's second pamphlet of poetry published by the award-winning Guillemot Press and came about as a result of a residency at the Birmingham & Midland Institute. Lentic refers to living near still or slow-moving water. In the first poem of this new pamphlet from Naush Sabah the slow-moving water is Birmingham’s River Cole and in the title poem it is Mangla Lake. Spoken through multiple voices - a mother, a new wife, a neighbour, a father - this pamphlet articulates varieties of unease: cultural, social, personal and spatial.

Naush Sabah is a writer, editor, and educator based in the West Midlands. Her debut pamphlet, Litanies, was published by Guillemot in 2021 and shortlisted for the Michael Marks Poetry Award. She is co-founder and editor of Poetry Birmingham Literary Journal and a Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing at Birmingham City University.

Sarah Fletcher is an American-British writer. Her debut collection PLUS ULTRA was published by Cheerio Publishing in 2023. Her poetry has appeared in The Poetry Review, The White Review, Poetry London, and other publications. She has written articles for The New Statesman, The Washington Post, and The Spectator. She holds a PhD from Aberystwyth in the relationship between chronic pain and linguistic expression.

Nafeesa Hamid is a poet; playwright; educator; performer; director and more recently, Associate Archivist at Vivid Projects. Her poetry collection Besharam (Verve Poetry Press) was highly commended in the Forward Prizes 2019. Nafeesa was published in Forward Poems of the Decade 2011-2020 (Faber Poetry) and has appeared on BBC Bitesize; BBC Radio 4 Comedy; The Verb; and literary festivals in UK and abroad. She received a scholarship for the Writing Poetry MA at Poetry School London 2023. Nafeesa's lyrical energy weaves her grandfather's witty Kashmiri style of storytelling with Brummy working-class grit.
