Join artist Stephen Nicol as he discusses Van Gogh's work,

Part One: The Netherlands

From his early years with his supportive family to his education and employment selling Art in Galleries in the Netherlands, Belgium and London. Embracing religion and becoming a failed missionary. Living among and drawing the rural peasants. His romances and infatuations. Moves to Paris. Montmartre and his decadent, bohemian lifestyle.

Part Two: Arles & the South of France

The yellow House and this innovative and productive period. Gaugin’s anticipated visit and their falling out. His voluntary admittance into asylums and breakdowns.. His alleged suicide which is now being contested with new evidence. and Van Gogh’s legacy.

PART ONE: EARLY YEARS. THE NETHERLANDS AND PARIS

March 1853 – February 1888

· The Van Gogh Family, their status and financial situation

· Vincent’s early education and employment

· His attempt at being a missionary in Belgium

· Starts to paint in oils after 10 years of drawing

· Influenced by the Barbizon rural Realism movement

· The Potato Eaters

· His admission to the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp

· Influenced by Japanese art from the Edo period

· Moves to Paris in his brother Theo’s apartment

· Studies at Corman’s Studio. Meets Emile Bernard, Toulouse Lautrec and Camille Pissarro.

· Profoundly influenced by Impressionism and Seurat and Signac’s Pointillism

· Series of paintings of Montmartre

· Leaves Paris owing to bohemian lifestyle on his health and Theo’s

PART TWO: THE SOUTH OF FRANCE

February 1888 – July 1890

· Arrives in Arles and eventually moves into “the Yellow House

· Inspired by the bright colours and warm climate

· Prolific period paints many portraits

· The Night Café and Starry Night

· Paul Gaugin’s visit and bandaged ear incident

· Admits himself into Saint Remy-de-Provence Asylum

· Exhibits at Société des Artists Independents in Paris to positive reviews

· Theo sells “Red Vineyard at Arles’

· Moves to Auvers-sur-Oise Clinic to be near Theo

· Paints “Church at Auvers-sur-Oise”

· Shot on July 27th dies July 29th . 1890

· Legacy and renown follow quickly

· Aftermath of Theo and the Van Gogh family
